Attorney General Kaul, Milwaukee Mayor Johnson Joined Protect Our Care on day two of a Six-Week, 17 State, 12,000+ Mile, Nationwide Bus Tour to Celebrate How The Biden-Harris Administration and Democrats in Congress Are Already “Driving Down Health Care Costs”

WISCONSIN – Yesterday, Protect Our Care’s Care Force One arrived in Wisconsin to spotlight the threat Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans pose to American health care. As MAGA Republicans fight to raise costs on working families, deny coverage for pre-existing conditions, and repeal the Inflation Reduction Act and Affordable Care Act, the Biden-Harris administration continues to improve access to quality and affordable health care. During events in Madison and Milwaukee speakers explained how Wisconsinites are already benefiting from new savings, including the $35 per month cap on insulin for seniors. Also highlighted were new provisions that go into effect on January 1, 2025, including a $2,000 annual cap for out of pocket costs on prescription drugs for seniors on Medicare.

In Madison, Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul reminded Wisconsinites that just five years the Affordable Care Act withstood its third constitutional challenge and drew a direct line between access to health care and protecting public safety.

Dr. Sophie Kramer, a family physician in Madison, and Samantha Crowley, a UW-Madison medical student, spoke passionately about the value of both the Affordable Care Act and the Inflation Reduction Act, as well as the importance of protecting women’s reproductive freedoms.

“Seven years ago I walked into the doctor’s office with a nagging cough and walked out with a stage four cancer diagnosis,” said Laura Packard, cancer survivor and health care advocate. “Luckily, I had good insurance that paid for the chemotherapy and radiation that I needed. The Inflation Reduction Act lowers health care costs for millions of people like me so they can afford the treatment they need to survive. President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Democrats in Congress, like Senator Tammy Baldwincontinue to deliver on their promise to lower health care costs as hardworking people begin to see even more savings.”

“Protect Our Care’s Care Force One is crisscrossing the nation with one message: lower costs are here and we’re not going back!” said Protect Our Care State Director Joe Zepecki. “We are at a crossroads. As the Biden-Harris administration continues to improve access to quality and affordable health care, Republicans like Donald Trump and Eric Hovde are threatening to raise costs on working families. They want to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act and Affordable Care Act to go back to the days when insurance companies made the rules and could deny people coverage and give more tax breaks to big corporations and the wealthiest Americans. We’ve come a long way, and we cannot go back.”

Later, in Milwaukee, Mayor Cavalier Johnson highlighted the pivotal role municipalities play in promoting the access of Obamacare health plans on the exchange. Milwaukee has aggressively promoted open enrollment periods to ensure city residents have access to health care – allowing more Wisconsinites to take advantage of Advanced Premium Tax Credits that limit premium payments to a percentage of monthly income.

Two organ transplant recipients noted the consumer protection provisions of the Affordable Care Act frequently mean the difference between life and death, and prevent financial ruin for Americans who fall ill through no fault of their own. Lynn Carey, a Germantown resident and retired nurse, also requires one of the first ten drugs up for negotiation between Medicare and the drug companies, a landmark provision of the Inflation Reduction Act that will expand to additional drugs next year. David Marstellar of Milwaukee called out MAGA Republicans for their years spent trying to repeal the Affordable Care Act and noted that after nine years on the public stage former President Trump recently said he had only the “concepts of a plan” for what would replace Obamacare.

Today, the “Lower Costs, Better Care” tour continues in Michigan. Over the next six weeks, Care Force One will travel to more than 17 states, make more than 50 stops, and travel nearly 12,000 miles. For more information, click here.
