MADISON, WI –Today, Representative Shelia Stubbs brought greetings at Africa Fest 2024, the African Association of Madison’s 24th annual celebration of African culture, history, and heritage. Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) released the following statement:
It was a great honor to welcome community members and guests to this year’s Africa Fest, generously hosted by the African Association of Madison. I would like to thank the African Association of Madison and all the wonderful community partners and volunteers who helped to plan and organize this spectacular festival.
This year’s theme, ‘Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion’ is deeply important to me. As the first African American to ever be elected to the State Legislature from Dane County, I can personally testify to the importance of representation in our community and our government, from the statehouse all the way to the White House.
It is critical that we protect the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in our state, so that we can acknowledge the value and beauty of our differences, ensure equitable outcomes for all our residents, and give everyone a seat at the table. In the words of the late Congresswoman Shirley Chisholm, ‘If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair.’
Today we get the opportunity to celebrate and explore our beautiful African cultures through abundant song, dance, food, and crafts. Additionally, attendees had the opportunity to participate in the Strides for Africa Run/Walk to raise funds for impoverished rural African communities. By supporting events like Africa Fest that embrace our rich and diverse heritage, we encourage pride in that heritage and grow the cultural competency and understanding in our communities that will lead to a more united, vibrant Wisconsin for all.
