Madison, Wis. – Today, with 20 days until Election Day, the Strong Schools, Strong Community campaign is announcing its third and final student co-chair. Tasha Noel, a junior at Capital High School, will help lead the campaign along with a deep bench of co-chairs: Representative Francesca Hong, Ruben Anthony, Sandy Morales, Jeff Mack, Jane Belmore, Pablo Baxter, and fellow student co-chairs Wyatt Milewski and Aharon Shelef.
Noel has joined as co-chair to demonstrate the positive impact Capital High School finding a new permanent home, through the success of the 2020 facilities referenda, at the Hoyt Building has had on her education and experience in Madison Public Schools. She’s shared that:
“Upgrading buildings, through the facilities referendum, and getting more resources for our schools will be essential to students’ learning. Also you never know what anyone is going through so I think increasing behavioral and mental health services through the operations referendum will be beneficial to the students and the teachers.”
Capitol High was the only alternative High School transformed through the investments the Madison community made thanks to the 2020 facilities referendum. This November 5, Madison voters will determine if the second alternative High School and one of the oldest school sites in the district, Shabazz City High, will have the opportunity to address critical safety concerns and accessibility issues through voting ‘YES’ on the Madison Metropolitan School District’s (MMSD) facilities referendum.
The 2024 MMSD operations referenda will shrink opportunity gaps by making a lasting investment into career and technical education courses across the district, expand world language opportunities for all students, and attract and retain more teachers to help keep Madison Public Schools competitive.
The facilities referenda will improve the heating, cooling, plumbing, and safety at 7 school sites from across the district. The chosen schools were identified based on which locations had the most urgent and pressing needs to address critical safety and compliance issues.
