We, at the We Are Many-United Against Hate (WAM-UAH), are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of former Wisconsin Sen. Tim Cullen (D) of Janesville. Sen. Cullen was a great public servant who always worked across bipartisan boundaries to help address the difficult issues facing our state.

His public service includes representing the Janesville area in Wisconsin’s State Senate 1975-87 and again 2011-15, serving as the Majority Leader 1982-87. He also served as secretary of the Wisconsin Department of Health and Social Services (1987–88) under Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson. After leaving office, Cullen chaired Common Cause Wisconsin, a nonpartisan good government advocacy organization, 2016-22.

When Masood Akhtar in 2016 launched WAM-UAH as a non-profit, non-partisan movement to build unity in classrooms and communities, Sen. Cullen immediately stepped forward to join the organization’s Advisory Board. Akhtar praised Sen. Cullen’s involvement and the excellent strategic guidance he has provided.

More recently, Sen. Cullen was named a co-chair of WAM-UAH ‘s Wisconsin Non-Partisan Unity Council, along with State Sen. Robert Cowles (R), former State Sen. Dale Schultz (R), and State Rep. Sue S. Conley (D). This Unity Council was created to focus on understanding the root causes of hate and division, and to discuss and implement nonpartisan strategies for combating these through education, particularly civic education, and nonpartisan policies.

We all will miss him and, moving forward, will dedicate our efforts to honor his memory.
