Donald Trump Hates Overtime Pay, Disrespects Workers Who Earn It
Waunakee, WI ‒ Wisconsin union voters are wise to the shell game that Donald Trump is playing when it comes to overtime protections. He is claiming that he will eliminate taxes on overtime pay but he fails to mention that he would do so by eliminating overtime pay altogether. “I know a lot about overtime. I hated to give overtime, I hated it. I’d get other people—I shouldn’t say this, but I’d get other people in. I wouldn’t pay,” he said at a rally in Erie, PA on Sunday.
Trump’s Project 2025 proposal puts in writing his intentions on overtime policy and this represents a wholesale regression from overtime protections that American workers currently benefit from. The Trump Project 2025 agenda proposes to change the overtime rules to allow employers to compensate overtime with paid time off instead of overtime pay. Project 2025 also suggests that the current federal overtime rules allow too many low-income workers in the South to qualify for overtime, and also wants to change the way that overtime is calculated to allow employers to combine weeks in order to avoid paying overtime. Taken together, Trump’s proposed policy would immediately harm hourly workers.
Union voters are well aware of the policies that govern overtime pay. When Donald Trump comes here and tries to sell this underhanded scam, we are wise to the lie he is again trying to sell. The truth is that Donald Trump does not care about the wellbeing of Wisconsin working people and he never has. Donald Trump views working people as a cost to be cut and not a worthy economic investment. Union voters should keep this in mind as we make our choice for president in November.
