(MILWAUKEE, WI) — Wisconsin AFL-CIO President Stephanie Bloomingdale released the following statement on the passing of former Wisconsin State Assembly Representative Fred Kessler:

It is with great sadness that I share the news of the passing of former Wisconsin state legislator, judge and friend Fred Kessler. In each of the many roles he played in his professional life, Fred was tireless in his pursuit of justice and fairness. His dedication to advancing the interests of people who might otherwise be marginalized was unmatched. He was a strong and effective advocate for public education, civil liberties and the importance of organized labor and the rights of working people.

While in the legislature, Fred had a perfect 100% voting record with the Wisconsin AFL-CIO. During the fight against Act 10 and the years that followed, he was a leader in the Assembly as Democrats pushed back against Scott Walker’s anti-union agenda.

As a gifted political strategist, Fred recognized the importance of fair electoral maps. He was a lifelong fighter against gerrymandering, and a nationally recognized expert on redistricting, a cause rooted in his unshakeable belief that in a democracy, everyone deserves an equal vote.

Throughout the years, I benefited greatly from Fred’s wise council. He was a friend upon whom I could always rely for sage advice, delivered with the good grace of a battled-tested happy warrior. I will miss our conversations greatly.

As we remember Fred Kessler’s remarkable service to the people of our state, our deepest condolences go out to his wife Joan and daughters Liza and Anna and his beloved family. May they take comfort in the memory of a life truly well-lived in service to others.

Rest in peace, Fred. You are truly missed.
