MADISON, Wis. – The Office of the Wisconsin State Public Defender (SPD) presented awards at its annual conference to honor staff, private attorneys, and partner organizations that have provided exceptional service and demonstrated a dedication to the mission of SPD.
The Public Defender Board bestowed its highest honor, the Eisenberg Award, to Southeastern Monitoring (SEM), a drug monitoring organization located in Elkhorn, Wisconsin. The Eisenberg Award is presented to organizations that provide exceptional service and improve the lives of citizens involved in the criminal justice system.
“SEM regularly steps up to fill the needs of the Elkhorn community, going above and beyond the monitoring services it offers. We are proud to recognize SEM’s dedication to serving the community,” said Public Defender Board Chair Ellen Thorn.
The 2024 Berkos Award, given to private bar attorneys that provide extraordinary service to SPD-appointed clients, was awarded to Fran Rivard and Cheryl Ward in recognition of their dedication to their communities. Fran and Cheryl’s diligence, passion, and commitment ensure indigent clients in their communities receive high-quality legal representation.
The Chiarkas Award recognizes an SPD staff member who demonstrates exceptional leadership. The 2024 Chiarkas Award was given to Catherine Dorl in recognition of her long-time leadership at SPD and her commitment to mentoring new attorneys. Catherine routinely shared advice and expertise, and SPD staff continue to benefit from the best practices Catherine taught before her retirement last month.
The first-annual Community Service Award was presented to Kate McStay and Jane Jerman for their commitment to coaching a Milwaukee-based girls softball team. Kate and Jane routinely exceed the traditional role of coach to offer support and mentorship to their players, and their dedication to the team serves a valuable role in the larger community.
“The wide variety of people honored today demonstrates the broad coalition of people committed to protecting justice for all. I’m proud to be part of this team that routinely goes above and beyond to serve others,” said State Public Defender Jennifer Bias.
