For the last few days there have been protests happening in Los Angeles against ICE and the Trump administration’s immigration policies. Since then, these protests have also spread to other cities.
Trump sent in the National Guard to LA, making this the first time that the National Guard has been federalized without a state’s consent since 1965. Now, he’s making bold claims that he’s going to arrest California’s governor for disagreeing with the order.
Trump has spent his two terms encouraging violence on his behalf and enacting cruel and unnecessary policy meant to target and victimize the people who oppose him. And yet, when protest springs up in defiance of him or his policies, he stops at nothing to crush it.
Even in these challenging times, when our democracy and civil rights are under direct attack, we are not powerless. Silence speeds up the erosion of our freedoms, but collective action can stop it in its tracks.
Here are a few things you can do:
- No Kings Day is this Saturday – find your local protest to stand up to this authoritarian administration.
- There are also Pride events happening all over, join our LGBTQ+ community in remembrance of the Stonewall Riots and honor the contribution of the LGBTQ+ community and culture.
- 75 Democrats joined Republicans in voting for HB Resolution 488 which expresses gratitude to ICE for “protecting the homeland”. Click here to see who voted for it.
- If your Representative voted for HB Resolution 488, feel free to give them a call or email to express your thoughts.
Thank you for taking this seriously,
Emily
