Funding will help protect the most vulnerable victims of crime

Wisconsin’s Child Advocacy Centers (CACs) reached a significant milestone with the Joint Finance Committee’s vote to allocate $2 million in annual, ongoing funding to CACs in the state budget. This is a major step forward in creating sustainable financial support so that our youngest and most vulnerable victims of crime receive justice and healing.

We extend our deepest gratitude to Representative Pat Snyder, Representative Karen Hurd and Senator Jesse James who unwaveringly advocated for increased funding. We also thank the Joint Finance Co-Chairs, Senator Howard Marklein and Rep. Mark Born for their willingness to include this critical investment that will be used to provide direct services to child victims – forensic interviews, mental health and victim advocacy.

We are also extremely grateful for the support of Attorney General Josh Kaul and the Department of Justice, law enforcement partners, the legal community as well as Joint Finance Committee members. This funding increase was the result of dedicated efforts by many who all recognized the urgent need for additional investment in CACs.

Child Advocacy Centers of Wisconsin is grateful for the one-time $20 million investment in victim service organizations across the state and remains committed to working collaboratively to establish a stable and consistent funding source for all organizations serving victims of crime and abuse.

The state budget’s CAC funding investment aligns with Act 13 which updates state statute language and formally recognizes the newest Child Advocacy Center and the statewide coalition, Child Advocacy Centers of Wisconsin (CACs of WI). These actions reflect a strong commitment by the State Legislature, Governor Evers and Attorney General Kaul to promote the safety, healing, and well-being of children, families, and communities.

CACs of Wisconsin are thankful for the updated statutory language and increased funding provided in the state budget so they can continue to comprehensively support the children they care for, serve and protect.
