MADISON, WI – The College Republicans of UW-Madison and UW-Whitewater College Republicans strongly condemn Judge Susan Craword’s unacceptably light sentence of a repeat felon who has committed violent crimes on or near both of our campuses. Her failure to provide justice for Jerome Winslow’s victims should disqualify her from serving as a Justice on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
In 2019, Jerome Winslow randomly beat and dragged a 19-year-old UW-Madison student down Langdon Street. He left her wounded on a snow bank with a broken jaw and damaged eye socket. The prosecutor recommended that Winslow be sentenced for 17 years behind bars, but Crawford decided to give him only seven. During the sentencing, she said, “I wish I could do something to fix Mr. Winslow’s trauma that he’s experienced.”
This is despite the fact that in 2017, Winslow pointed a gun to the head of a UW-Whitewater student on that campus. His rap sheet also includes felony battery to a police officer, domestic abuse, and criminal damage to property. This was known to Crawford when she made the permissive sentencing decision just two years later.
“Crawford’s commitment to fringe legal theories makes Wisconsinites less safe. She has argued for leniency for sex offenders, gave a child rapist only six years behind bars, and has shown utter disregard for public safety time and time again,” said UW-Whitewater College Republicans Chair Sophia Fyfe.
“Crawford has a long history of prioritizing her personal politics over impartially applying the law. That is not what the role of a judge is. Voters must make sure on April 1st that Brad Schimel is elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court,” GOP Badgers co-President Benjamin Rothove said.
