Mequon, Wis. – Concordia University Wisconsin has been awarded a $1.1 million federal grant to support “America 250: Teaching History & Civics Through Economic Lenses” (America 250), an innovative, professional development initiative designed to strengthen civics and economics education in honor of the nation’s upcoming Semiquincentennial.
Through America 250, CUW will help lead the way in Wisconsin and the Midwest in this important celebration of America’s birthday. CUW will partner with EconomicsWisconsin and local public and private K-12 schools to provide professional development opportunities for 300 middle and high school social studies teachers across Wisconsin, Michigan and other parts of the Midwest. Over the course of three years, these educators are expected to impact more than 21,000 students, helping them gain a deeper understanding of the economic and civic foundations of the United States.
“America 250 embodies Concordia’s mission to develop informed citizens who understand the principles and freedoms upon which our country was built,” said Dr. Scott Niederjohn, dean of the Batterman School of Business, professor of Economics, and director of the Concordia Free Enterprise Center. “We are honored to lead this important initiative as our nation approaches its 250th anniversary.”
The program will feature two-day, in-person seminars that integrate curriculum on the American founding and economic principles. Educators will also receive yearlong coaching and professional support from a dedicated coordinator of teacher professional development.
By blending history, civics, and economics, America 250 aims to help teachers and students alike rediscover the ideas that gave rise to the American experiment in political and economic liberty and democracy.
