Rice Lake Chronotype: Wis. Supreme Court candidate campaigns in Rice Lake

“Wisconsin Supreme Court candidate Susan Crawford made a campaign stop in Rice Lake on Saturday, visiting voters to discuss her background, judicial philosophy and how she differs from her opponent.

Crawford said at the meet-and-greet hosted by the Barron County Democratic Party that the Wisconsin Supreme Court race is about qualifications, and her judicial philosophy is to apply the law fairly and impartially with common sense to ensure the law protects Wisconsinites.

Currently a Dane County judge, Crawford previously has worked as an attorney and prosecutor covering a variety of legal cases and has argued before the Wisconsin Supreme Court. But aside from her career, she counts growing up in Chippewa Falls and graduating from Chi-Hi as formative to her judicial philosophy.

“I’m from this area, and I grew up learning values like common sense, and right from wrong, and that is what I’m bringing to the Wisconsin Supreme Court,” she said.

Crawford’s opponent is Brad Schimel, who served as a Republican attorney general from 2015-19 and now sits on the Waukesha County judicial bench. On Saturday she painted him as an extreme partisan politician.

“He has always been about politics and partisanship and self-promotion, and we’re seeing that in this race,” Crawford said.

However, the race is not partisan despite Schimel’s efforts to make it so, she said.

“I am prepared to be fair and impartial as a member of the Wisconsin Supreme Court,” Crawford said. “And I’m not going to bring any kind of partisan agenda to the job. I believe that’s what Brad Schimel is trying to do, trying to bring an extreme, far-right agenda to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. That’s not what it’s for, and it’s not what Wisconsinites need on their Supreme Court.”

“Now I want people to know that I am running for Wisconsin State Supreme Court, because I want to protect the rights of all Wisconsinites, under our constitution, under our law,” Crawford said Saturday. “I am going to be a fair and impartial justice. I’m here today, because I’m going to work for every vote and make sure that our Supreme Court remains fair and impartial and that we don’t have a court that has somebody with an extreme political agenda, looking to politicize the court.”
