MADISON, Wis. – As friends and families across Wisconsin get ready to hit the trails this Fourth of July weekend, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is encouraging all ATV and UTV riders to make safety part of the celebration by choosing to ride sober.
So far this year, 19 people have been killed in ATV/UTV crashes. Most of them were not wearing seat belts or helmets, and alcohol and speed were also contributing factors.
Whether you’re exploring scenic backroads, cruising through the Northwoods, or simply out for a day of adventure, a clear head is the best gear you can bring – followed by helmets and seatbelts. The Wisconsin DNR’s off-highway vehicle administrator, Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, offers safety tips in this media briefing video.
“Wisconsin has some of the best ATV and UTV riding in the country, and we want everyone to enjoy it safely,” said Lt. Holsclaw. “Riding sober means you’re more alert, more in control and more likely to enjoy a safe return at the end of the day.” Last year, over half of fatal ATV/UTV crashes in Wisconsin involved alcohol.
Riders are also encouraged to ensure their vehicles are legal for use in Wisconsin. Here are some things to remember about machine width restrictions in Wisconsin:
- The maximum width for a UTV is 65 inches, measured outside of wheel rim to rim.
- UTVs that are too wide can create a safety issue for you and other trail users.
- It is illegal to modify the factory width – this can result in a citation on the trail.
- It is illegal to operate a machine that is over 65 inches on a public road or trail – operation in these areas will result in a citation.
