MADISON, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) today announced the return of Invasive Species Awareness Weekend on June 21-22, 2025.
More than 30 Invasive Species Awareness Weekend events will be held around the state to raise awareness of the many invasive species that threaten our natural habitats and encourage folks to learn and take action. Events include educational programs, invasive species control workshops, a 5K run/walk at the Kettle Moraine State Forest – Lapham Peak Unit and more.
These events offer activities for participants of all ages. Visitors will learn important techniques and skills for slowing the spread of invasive species and applying these practices at their own homes or properties.
Volunteers attending fieldwork events are encouraged to wear gloves, closed-toed shoes, long sleeves and pants that can get dirty. Most events will take place outdoors, so attendees are reminded to bring plenty of sunscreen and water; water refill stations may be available at some events.
Invasive species are nonnative plants, animals and diseases that can harm the economy, environment and human health. Invasive species impact our parks and natural areas, affecting wildlife habitat and making it difficult to enjoy nature. Invasive plant seeds can be spread via mud or burs on shoes, clothing or pets. It’s important to clean yourself, your equipment and your pet after recreating.
