MADISON — The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is now accepting applications for the Recovery High Schools Planning Grant and the Recovery High Schools Operational Grant.

These grants, established under 2023 Wisconsin Act 72, support the planning and operation of recovery high schools in Wisconsin. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations as well as public, private, and tribal schools. Applications will be accepted through June 20, 2025, and award amounts will vary based on the number of applicants and the number of currently operating recovery high schools in the state. Under state law, a recovery high school is defined as a school that:

  • Serves only high school grades,
  • Is specifically designed for students in recovery from substance use or from co-occurring mental health challenges, and
  • Awards high school credits that apply toward a diploma either from the school itself or are transferable to a district-issued diploma.

Planning grant funds may be used to hire consultants, develop programming, curriculum and mental health services, and other costs related to developing a final plan. Operational grant funds may be used for hiring staff, securing a school location, substance use programming, student transportation, and more.
