Madison, Wis. – The Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS) wrapped up the second of two webinars Thursday about updates to the state Commercial Building Code (CBC).

On September 1, Wisconsin adopted the 2021 International Code Council (ICC) standards with some Wisconsin-specific amendments, known in the industry as Wisconsinisms.

“We’re always ready to collaborate with Wisconsin industries on ways to improve safety for Wisconsin communities and families,” said DSPS Secretary Dan Hereth. “We first engaged the building industry about this commercial code update in 2021 and spent years gathering input to shape the final version. These webinars are just the latest steps to help everyone understand the changes and help make it an easier transition.”

Wisconsin DSPS offered two webinars about the CBC changes and Wisconsinisms and invited licensed professionals impacted by this change. DSPS has also made the recording available. In total, more than 1,100 people attended one of the two events.

The new CBC took effect on September 1, when the Wisconsin Legislative Reference Bureau published the new code.

DSPS will accept plans submitted under the current (2015) code through the month of September. Starting October 1, all commercial building plans submitted to DSPS for approval must meet the standards set in the upgraded code.

The CBC establishes standards for commercial buildings in the state, including multi-family residential buildings.
