Two-factor authentication helps protect claimant accounts from being taken over by someone who has gained access to a claimant’s username and password.

MADISON – Today, the Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is announcing that two-factor authentication, which helps protect claimants’ personal information and the security of the Unemployment Insurance (UI) program, is now required for claimants to access the UI Claimant Portal.

Two-factor authentication is an additional layer of account security that uses two factors of information to confirm a login attempt. These factors usually include something known (like a username and password) plus something owned (like a mobile phone) to prevent unauthorized users from accessing an account even if the password has been stolen or compromised.

“I am excited to announce that, as part of our ongoing commitment to security for unemployment claimants, two-factor authentication for DWD’s UI Claimant Portal is now required,” DWD Secretary Amy Pechacek said. “Protecting the sensitive personal data and financial information of Wisconsin’s UI claimants is one of our highest priorities at DWD and will give claimants greater peace of mind as they access the benefits they’ve earned.”

Claimants may choose between three methods when enrolling in two-factor authentication on the Claimant Portal: text message, phone call, or authenticator app.

Two-factor authentication should only be authorized on a phone that they will have access to every time they need to log into the Claimant Portal to certify and access their UI information. If claimants choose to use an authenticator app(s), they should download the app on their mobile device before enrolling. Claimants are encouraged to enroll in multiple authentication methods on different devices in case they change their phone number, misplace their phone, or delete a mobile app.

While text messages and phone calls are available for two-factor authentication, DWD recommends using an authenticator app. Authenticator apps provide several advantages over other methods including enhanced security, higher speeds, increased reliability, and the option for multipurpose use.
