MADISON, Wis. – Family Friendly Wisconsin released the following statement today in support of child care providers, educators, parents and community members who have been rallying for state investments in child care at the state Capitol all week.

Brita Olsen, Family Friendly Wisconsin State Director:

“Wisconsin has long had a child care crisis, but this week, child care providers, educators, parents and community members sounded a very consequential alarm: Our child care system is at a financial breaking point.

“The Badger State is one of six states that does not invest in early childhood education. Child care providers and the working families who rely on them are asking for a $480 million investment – mirroring Gov. Tony Evers’ budget proposal – which would maintain wages for providers at $13 an hour. Last week, Republicans on the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) removed this budget item without explanation. Without state funding, it is anticipated that one-quarter of centers across the state will close.

“Quality, affordable child care allows parents to work secure in the knowledge their children are well cared for. Family Friendly Wisconsin urges the Wisconsin Legislature to prioritize the needs of providers and working families by investing in child care.”
