MILWAUKEE – Today, Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley issued the following statement after the federal government shut down at midnight.

“Just yesterday, I presented a budget for Milwaukee County that already made tough decisions about the health services we provide for working families based on a reduction in federal funding. Today, the President and members of Congress shut down the federal government, throwing into jeopardy the federal funding that supports residents and families in Milwaukee County and across Wisconsin. The fight in Washington is about whether our families, children, veterans, seniors, and millions of Americans will continue to have access to the affordable health care that they rely on. While Congress plays politics, real people’s health and livelihoods are on the line.

“Milwaukee County remains committed to becoming the healthiest county in Wisconsin, but as I said in my budget address yesterday, we cannot do it alone. We simply have limited options to address the gaps that a loss of federal funding will create. Congress must end this shutdown and return to the table to work out a government funding deal today. Milwaukee County families should not be casualties of petty political fights and lose the health care they deserve.”
