Minocqua, WI – After a five-year legal struggle marked by political retaliation and bureaucratic overreach, the Minocqua Brewing Company has emerged victorious in its zoning dispute with Oneida County. On Thursday, the County’s Board of Adjustment voted unanimously to reinstate the company’s business permit for their historic flagship taproom in downtown Minocqua, ending a prolonged and costly battle that began with a political sign.
The conflict started in 2020 when Oneida County’s zoning department issued a violation notice for displaying a Biden/Harris campaign sign on the company’s building. This initial dispute escalated into a years-long campaign of legal and regulatory challenges, which owner Kirk Bangstad attributes to politically motivated actions by members of the “Old Boys Club” in local government.
“We were finally allowed to do business without interference,” said Bangstad. “This wasn’t just about zoning. It was about political suppression and the misuse of local authority.”
The turning point came last week when the Board of Adjustment, under legal advisement from an outside attorney retained by the County’s insurance provider, acknowledged that denying the company’s appeal could constitute a violation of Wisconsin law. The board’s in-person visit to the Minocqua Brewing Company’s flagship taproom confirmed full compliance with all zoning codes.
Bangstad expressed gratitude to supporters who contributed to the company’s legal defense fund, stating, “Without their support and encouragement, we wouldn’t have survived this fight.”
Despite the ordeal, Bangstad remains hopeful: “This experience drained my resources and tested my faith in government, but it also reinforced my belief in the power of grassroots support. Together, we proved that community-driven resistance can overcome entrenched political forces.”
The Minocqua Brewing Company plans to pursue reimbursement for legal expenses incurred during the dispute and looks forward to operating unimpeded in the upcoming 2026 season.
