Wisconsin 2nd District Congressman Mark Pocan got a firsthand look at the One City Schools difference recently, when he stopped by for a visit and tour of the innovative educational model on Madison’s south side.
“We are incredibly honored that Congressman Pocan shared his time, ideas, and passion for education with our Scholars and staff,” One City CEO Kaleem Caire said of the visit. “Our time together was inspiring and a real opportunity to show off what’s possible with helping all of our young people ready themselves to be future leaders,” Caire added.
Pocan is a senior member of the U.S. House Appropriations Committee, which oversees federal funding for education.
The Congressman visited One City classrooms, chatted with Scholars, teachers, and staff and learned about the school’s unique role as a demonstration laboratory for innovation in public education.
“We know we are doing things differently, providing meaningful opportunities for how our young people gain knowledge and develop lifelong leadership skills,” Caire said. “One City is all about experiences and growth, and the Congressman’s desire to see firsthand how we’re doing what we’re doing is both meaningful and deeply appreciated.”
Pocan learned more about groundbreaking partnerships One City has established to bolster student learning and experiences. They include work with organizations like El Education, Project Read AI, Families & Schools Together, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dane County, the Wisconsin Center for Education Research, Wisconsin Athletics, Summit Credit Union, Universities of Wisconsin and Own it! Conversations about additional community partnerships in support of One City Scholars are underway with Edgewood College, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the University of Florida Literacy Institute.
