Vulnerable House Republicans Including Representatives Bryan Stiel, Derrick Van Orden, and Tony Wied Vote to Slash the Health Care Their Constituents Depend On
WISCONSIN – This week, Representatives Bryan Stiel (WI-01), Derrick Van Orden (WI-03), and Tony Wied (WI-08), and Republican lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted to advance a budget resolution that includes slashing Medicaid funding by nearly $1 trillion in order to give tax breaks to the ultra-wealthy and big corporations. This budget resolution opens the door for Republicans to achieve their goal of cutting up to $2 trillion from Medicaid, ripping away health care from tens of millions of Americans and 1.1 million Wisconsinites.
Key Republican lawmakers, including Wisconsin Representatives Bryan Steil, Derrick Van Orden, and Tony Wied, voted in favor of these devastating health care cuts despite representing more constituents on Medicaid than margins of victory in 2024.
House District | Number of People With Medicaid | 2024 Margin of Victory |
Bryan Steil (WI-01) | 101,000 | 40,113 |
Derrick Van Orden (WI-03) | 90,900 | 11,256 |
Tony Wied (WI-08) | 85,400 | 61,374 |
“Voting to advance the MAGA budget plan endorsed by Donald Trump puts Medicaid coverage for more than 1 million Wisconsinites at risk,” said Protect Our Care Wisconsin State Director Joe Zepecki. “These lawmakers represent more constituents who rely on Medicaid than their margins of victory in 2024. Despite that cold, hard math, they are apparently willing to jeopardize health coverage in a way that will raise costs for everyone else. Supporting this approach of taking a sledgehammer to Medicaid would be terrible for Wisconsin businesses and families, and could come at a very real price politically for these Members of Congress.”
