Washington, D.C. — Today, Speaker Johnson sent the House home without lifting a finger to address the GOP’s premium crisis. Republicans are running from the consequences of their own actions after engineering a health care catastrophe. Over 21 million Americans are staring down massive premium hikes and coverage losses on January 1 because Donald Trump and Republicans prioritized tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations over the health and well-being of hard-working families. Democrats’ three-year clean extension of the tax credits gained majority support in the House this week but Trump and Mike Johnson are turning their backs on the American people, refusing to protect the health and well-being of millions across the country. Now, Republicans are heading home for the holidays, leaving behind a crisis they created and offering no solutions and no relief.

“Republicans fled Washington after lighting a match to Americans’ health care and refusing to put out the fire,” said Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach. “They knew their actions would send premiums soaring, rip coverage away from millions, and saddle families with medical debt – and they did it anyway. They deliberately destroyed access to affordable health care, and when millions raised the alarm, they ran. Republicans packed their bags and left working people to be crushed under the weight of the GOP’s self-induced health care crisis. The American people will remember who left them to suffer while playing political games, and they will not be kind come next November.”
