Washington, D.C. – Today, as we commemorate the 60th anniversary of Medicare and Medicaid, Senate Democrats, under the leadership of Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, are introducing legislation to repeal the health care cuts Trump and Republicans passed as part of their big, ugly bill. The GOP spending bill made the largest cuts to health care in American history to fund massive tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations.
In addition to kicking more than 15 million Americans off their health care, the bill will drive up the cost of coverage and care for middle-class Americans and force hundreds of hospitals and nursing homes to cut services or shut down, leaving thousands without jobs and entire communities without care. Democrats’ new legislation would undo Republicans’ devastating cuts, saving Medicaid and millions of Americans from going uninsured. The legislation would also permanently extend tax credits that lower the cost of Affordable Care Act coverage for millions of middle-class families.

“Senate Democrats are fighting to protect Americans’ health care and lower costs for everyday families with this new legislation,” said Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach. “At a time when health care costs are skyrocketing and when millions are struggling to make ends meet, Republicans have passed a bill that slashes coverage, hikes costs, and rips coverage from millions so they can give massive tax breaks to CEOs and big corporations. As we mark 60 years of Medicare and Medicaid, Americans deserve leaders who protect the middle class and the most vulnerable – seniors, people with disabilities, children – not politicians who put the ultrarich first.”
