Washington, D.C – Today, Senator Ron Johnson and his Republican colleagues delivered a devastating blow to hard-working 271,589 Wisconsinites by hiking their health insurance premiums, pushing thousands toward crippling medical debt, and kicking hundreds of thousands off their health care altogether. After months of chaos and uncertainty, Senate Republicans voted to rip away tax credits that make coverage affordable for millions of families while Democrats unanimously voted to keep them. Beginning January 1, premiums will double or triple for over 21 million Americans, including 271,589 Wisconsinites. The consequences will be felt in every corner of the state, from Kenosha to Superior.
“Senator Ron Johnson just voted to abandon 272,000 families — jacking up their health care costs to budget-busting levels,” said Protect Our Care Wisconsin Director Joe Zepecki. “Republicans know exactly what this will mean. 271,589 Wisconsinites forced into impossible choices: health insurance or rent, health insurance or groceries, health insurance or the electric bill. This vote by Senator Johnson and his colleagues was a calculated attack on hard-working families across the nation, all so Trump and Republicans can keep showering billionaires and big corporations with tax breaks. Every cancelled doctor’s appointment, every skipped prescription, every family pushed into financial turmoil traces right back to the choice Republicans made. With this vote, Republicans told struggling Wisconsin families loud and clear: ‘You’re on your own.’”
