Washington, D.C. – Today, Speaker Mike Johnson doubled down on continuing the GOP health care crisis and shutdown, saying he would rather “let the process play out” than work with Democrats to negotiate a budget that protects hard-working families’ health care. Republicans control the House, Senate, and White House, and with all this power, they decided to gut over $1 trillion from working people’s health care and hike premium costs for over 24 million hard-working people, all so billionaires and big corporations can receive massive tax breaks. Now, as the fallout from the GOP health care betrayal ensues, millions of Americans are on the brink of financial ruin, nearly 600 hospitals, maternity wards, nursing homes, and other critical providers are shuttering, and Speaker Johnson’s own constituents are getting slapped with $34,000 increases in their annual health care costs, he is perfectly comfortable with sitting idly by and watching the country burn.

In response to Speaker Johnson’s stark indifference to the plight of the American people, Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach issued the following statement:

“As Trump-GOP policies devastate Americans from coast to coast, and Congressional Republicans continue the longest government shutdown in history, Mike Johnson’s callousness is appalling. He won’t even agree to allow a vote in the House to restore the health care tax credits that Republicans stripped away from millions of Americans. He’d rather more small businesses be financially annihilated, more hospitals vanish out of thin air, and more Americans — including in his own district — empty out their life savings just to go to a doctor. It’s unconscionable, and voters, as they demonstrated in the November 4th bellwether elections across the nation, will hold the GOP to account for playing with their lives and selling out the American people — all so Republicans can provide more tax breaks to their billionaire buddies.”
