Madison, WI – The Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities today advanced a bill funding spinal cord injury research grants for Wisconsin researchers. The legislation advanced out of committee on a unanimous bipartisan vote. Rep. Scott Allen (R-Waukesha) cosponsored the bill and serves on the committee.
“This legislation is about investing in research that improves the quality of life for people who have suffered a spinal cord injury,” said Rep. Allen.
The Department of Health Services (DHS) would award grants supporting research into innovative research and rehabilitation efforts across different methodologies. The legislation appropriates $5 million over the biennial budget. Grant recipients would also be required to present their findings at symposia arranged by DHS.
“Researchers have been making great strides, especially over the last decade,” said Rep. Allen. “This legislation is going to ensure there is funding for innovation, and that the research is shared for the benefit of many.”
The bill now advances to the Assembly Rules Committee, where it may be scheduled for a floor vote.
