Madison, WI – Rep. Scott Allen (R-Waukesha) released the following statement regarding President Trump’s Executive order on addressing homelessness:
“Public safety should always be the priority. Over the last several decades, we’ve thrown billions at programs that treat symptoms while ignoring the root causes of homelessness, like untreated mental health issues and rampant drug abuse.
“The Executive Order discusses redirecting grants, prioritizing funding, and providing other support so that state and local governments can tackle the root causes of homelessness. However, federal ideas sometimes devolve into unfunded mandates. The best-case scenario is that communities get appropriate assistance, and the benefits outweigh the costs. Thriving businesses and economic growth can’t occur without safe streets.
“It is time to stop repeating the same mistakes and expecting progress. This Executive Order is an opportunity for safer communities and restoring a sense of dignity to fellow humans.”
