Introduces measures to prevent gun violence, keep communities safe

MADISON, Wis. – Today, Rep. Deb Andraca (D – Whitefish Bay) joined her colleagues to introduce a package of gun safety legislation in the State Capitol. This package includes gun violence prevention measures, which are widely supported by communities across the state, many of which have been either removed from Governor Evers’ budget or repeatedly introduced in prior legislative sessions with no opportunity for public hearings.

Rep. Andraca released the following statement regarding the bill package:

“Every Wisconsinite deserves the opportunity to walk down their sidewalk, go to school, or be in any public space without the fear of being at risk from needless and preventable acts of gun violence.

“This bill package my Democratic colleagues and I are introducing today will keep our friends, families, and communities safe through common-sense measures that would make it harder for dangerous people to get guns and easier for families to keep their loved ones safe.

“Unfortunately, Republicans in the Wisconsin Legislature have blocked every single one of these bills – they have refused to hold votes or even public hearings on bills that we know would prevent acts of gun violence from ever happening.

“Once again, Democrats are here to do what’s right and pass legislation that we know will save lives, that Wisconsinites overwhelmingly support, and will keep our communities safe.

“As a long-time gun safety advocate, I look forward to working with the Governor and my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to ensure these vital safety measures become law this session. It is far past time that we take action to ensure we do not see any more preventable tragedies unfold.
