MADISON…Today, Assembly Republicans unveiled their plan to move forward with amending the state’s Constitution to require photo ID when voting.  The resolutions have officially been introduced in the new 2025 session and are moving through the legislative process.  Representative Tyler August (R-Walworth) said the goal is for the question to be on statewide ballots in April 2025.

“The legislature continues to make election integrity one of our top priorities,” said August.  “I am confident that voters will approve Voter ID overwhelmingly in April.”

Recent studies have shown that over 80% of Americans support voter ID requirements.  In fact, current law in Wisconsin has required voter ID in elections for nearly a decade, with no major issues.  August pointed out that cementing the popular law into the Constitution will ensure an activist court is unable to strike down the provision.

“It is disappointing that we have seen activist courts legislating from the bench,” explained August.  “Our goal is to get Voter ID into the constitution so that the common-sense law cannot be blocked by progressive judges.”

If approved by both the Assembly and Senate, it will be the second consecutive legislative session that the constitutional amendment has passed.  The measure does not have to be approved by Governor Evers and instead goes directly to the voters for their approval on a statewide ballot.
