MADISON…Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly passed Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 2, which would amend the state’s Constitution to require photo ID when voting.  The resolution has now passed both houses of the legislature and will go to the voters for approval.  Representative Tyler August (R-Walworth) voted in favor of the resolution to ensure voter ID is required in elections. “By passing this constitutional amendment today, Assembly Republicans have followed through on our promise to make election integrity one of our top priorities,” said August.  “Showing photo ID at the polls is a common-sense way to ensure our elections remain secure.” Current law in Wisconsin has required voter ID in elections for nearly a decade with no major issues reported.  In fact, recent studies have shown that over 80% of Americans support voter ID requirements.  August pointed out that cementing the popular law into the Constitution will ensure an activist court is unable to strike down the provision. “It is disappointing that we have seen an increase in activist courts legislating from the bench,” explained August.  “Our goal is to get Voter ID into the constitution so that the common-sense law cannot be blocked by progressive judges. I am confident that voters will approve Voter ID overwhelmingly in April.” The measure does not have to be approved by Governor Evers and instead goes directly to the voters for their approval on a statewide ballot on April 1, 2025.
