Madison – This morning, Wisconsin Democrats introduced legislation aimed at lowering the cost of child care and ensuring that child care facilities remain open, adequately funded, and effectively operated. Representative Jill Billings (D-La Crosse), Ranking Member of the Assembly Committee on Children and Families, released the following statement:

“Since 2007, more than half of all child care providers in Wisconsin have closed. This is a failure of funding and a failure of legislative action and leadership. With economic uncertainty rising and many families facing difficult financial situations, it is imperative that we provide the stability of reliable and accessible child care. Parents should not have to choose between their careers and the well-being of their children.”

“The need for affordable and accessible child care in Wisconsin is dire. Investing in child care is a matter of supporting families, children, our communities, and the economy. We must act now to ensure that our children have the foundation they need to succeed and that our workforce remains robust and ready for the challenges ahead.”
