MADISON – Today, Legislative Democrats introduced a package of bills related to UW System’s student success. Representative Brienne Brown is the lead author of the Tuition Promise Bill, similar to UW-Madison’s Bucky’s Tuition Promise for low-income, first-time students.
Representative Brown (D-Whitewater) released the following statement:
“I live in Whitewater, a proud university town – home to UWW, one of the campuses that will benefit directly from this program. The median family income in Whitewater is about $39,000 a year. That means many bright, hardworking young people in my community are doing everything right – studying hard, working jobs, dreaming big – but still wondering how they’ll afford college.
The Tuition Promise changes that. It says to those students, “You belong here. We believe in you. Your future is worth the investment.” It means students could attend college close to home, contribute to their local community, and graduate without a crushing load of debt.
The Tuition Promise is more than a program. It’s a commitment – to our students, our families, and our state’s future. Because when we invest in education, we invest in innovation, in community, and in hope.
So let’s make good on this promise. Wisconsin’s future depends on the talent and determination of our young people. The Tuition Promise gives them the chance to rise – and to keep that talent right here, where it belongs.”
