MADISON, WI – Today, Governor Tony Evers signed 2025 Wisconsin Act 29, formerly Senate Bill 235, into law, which gives campground owners and operators clear authority to protect guests and property across Wisconsin. Representative Alex Dallman (R-Markesan), the Assembly author, released the following statement:
“Senate Bill 235 passed both the Assembly and Senate with strong bipartisan support,” said Representative Dallman. “I am glad to see Governor Evers sign this bill into law. Wisconsin prides itself on safe, family-friendly outdoor recreation and 2025 Wisconsin Act 29 closes a landlord-tenant loophole that unwelcomed guests have abused for years.”
Senate Bill 235 was passed unanimously by the Senate Committee on Judiciary and Public Safety in June, and subsequently passed by the Senate and Assembly. Key provisions of 2025 Wisconsin Act 29 include:
- Prohibits unauthorized entry or “squatting” at a campground without consent
- Requires written warning by campground owners and operators to leave the premises if the guest does not have permission to stay on the campground
- Authorizes law enforcement to arrest an individual if they do not depart the campground after a written warning and may include misdemeanor charges
- Clarifies that campgrounds across Wisconsin do not apply to the landlord-tenant statutes, ensuring clarity and consistency in enforcement
“This is a common-sense measure and ensures families who enjoy camping across Wisconsin are able to safely. I am confident that this will give many campers peace of mind as the summer season continues.
