MADISON, WI – Representative Alex Dallman (R-Markesan) released the following statement regarding the May 8, 2025 Executive Session of the Joint Committee on Finance:

“Today, the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC) returned to our state’s base budget by removing over 600 of the Governor’s proposals that would have massively increased spending and taxes,” said Representative Dallman. “Like any responsible family budget, you start by setting money aside to fund your basic needs – the state budget should be no different and that was the first step that JFC took today. As we move through the next several weeks, I will work with my JFC colleagues to prioritize funding for the areas of the budget that my constituents and Wisconsin value the most.

“Over the past several years, Governor Evers has single-handedly spent hundreds of millions of dollars on new programs and pet projects with funds that are no longer available from COVID – now he wants to tax everyday Wisconsinites to keep up. The governor has already forced an increase to property taxpayers’ bills for the next 400 years! I will fight every day to make sure my constituents are not being forced to send any higher taxes to Madison in order to bail out the governor’s reckless spending.”

The governor’s recommended budget, if approved without any consideration, would bring our state’s general fund to a negative balance in two years (-$1.639 billion), according to the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau.

His budget would have:

  • Spent over $118.9 billion (a more than 20 percent increase over base budget)
  • Hired over 1,300 additional state-funded bureaucrats
  • Created a new 9.8% income tax bracket

“Republicans on the Joint Committee on Finance are responsible stewards of taxpayer dollars. The State Constitution also requires us to balance the state budget. Republicans will do our very best to fund our state’s priorities like education, tax relief, and our state’s infrastructure.”
