MADISON – This evening, Governor Tony Evers delivered his annual State of the State address, highlighting his key policy priorities for the next year. The speech indicated an ongoing focus on lowering costs for working families, reducing crime and gun violence, and improving health and educational outcomes in our schools.

Representative Joan Fitzgerald (D-Fort Atkinson) released the following statement:

“I am incredibly pleased by the tireless efforts of Governor Evers to fight for our kids, keep money in the pockets of working-class Wisconsinites, and ensure the safety of communities across the state. With the direction he has guided our state in the last years, I am hopeful that his continued efforts to improve and protect our state will benefit us all.

“Particularly, in the face of countless acts of violence against the children of our state in their own schools, I commend Governor Evers’ for prioritizing the safety of our kids. A child should never have to put the fear of their livelihood over the gift of learning. I have spent the better part of the last decade advocating for policies just like this, and I am fully committed to supporting the Governor’s efforts in this fight.

“Despite significant decreases in the rate of homicides, burglaries, and motor vehicle thefts in Wisconsin in recent years, the rate of gun deaths in our state has increased insurmountably. I stand by Governor Evers in enacting common sense gun safety laws to reduce these avoidable tragedies.

“By investing in public safety and education at all levels, I believe that the priorities of the Evers Administration will make positive changes to the lives of all Wisconsinites. Alongside the Governor, my colleagues and I in the State Legislature will strive to work together to make these changes possible.”
