MADISON – Representative Benjamin Franklin (R-De Pere) released the following statement after Governor Evers requested the State Building Commission to release the $15 million allocated in the state budget to create a plan for the closure of Green Bay Correctional Institution.

“I appreciate all the work being done to ensure the closure of GBCI, from both sides of the aisle. I remain steadfast in my commitment to work with all stakeholders to ensure government accountability and to do what is right for the constituents of Northeast Wisconsin. The closure of GBCI has been—and continues to be—at the forefront of conversations, both in Madison and locally.

As we move forward, our focus must remain on ensuring this closure is carried out effectively, responsibly, and with the long-term interests of our communities in mind. The $15 million allocated is a meaningful step, but its release must be paired with transparency, careful planning, and a bipartisan commitment to results—not rhetoric.

This is not about politics—this is about people. It’s about ensuring public safety, improving the corrections system, and addressing the growing challenges posed by an outdated facility. It’s also about respecting the concerns of the residents, workers, and families directly impacted by this transition.

I have met with Governor Evers’ office, as well as Department of Corrections Secretary Jared Hoy. I look forward to keeping these lines of communication open to ensure we are delivering results. I will continue to advocate for the closure of GBCI, and I remain committed to making sure it’s done the right way.”
