MADISON, Wis. – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly voted unanimously, 98–0, to approve Assembly Bill (AB) 596 and Assembly Bill 597, legislation that creates a state matching grant program to support nonprofit organizations providing essential services to homeless veterans across Wisconsin. Under the program, which would be administered by the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs, eligible organizations will receive state funds that are matched with a federal per diem, enhancing support for:

  • Safe and stable housing for veterans experiencing homelessness
  • Comprehensive supportive services, including job training, counseling, and case management
  • Pathways to long-term independence and well-being for veterans who served our country

Unanimous Support Reflects Bipartisan Commitment

The 98–0 vote demonstrates strong bipartisan consensus and a shared commitment to serving those who served us.

“With the passage of Assembly Bill 596 and Assembly Bill 597, Wisconsin is sending a powerful message: we see our veterans, and we are committed to their care. By matching federal per diem funds, these bills strengthen housing programs for veterans experiencing homelessness while allowing them to stay closer to home — giving our service members not just a roof over their heads, but a pathway to dignity, stability, and a brighter future.”

Impact on Wisconsin Communities

These bills represent a major step forward for veteran services throughout the state. Local nonprofits will now have stronger funding mechanisms and increased flexibility to expand housing and transition programs. The matching grant structure encourages collaboration across public, private, and nonprofit partners ensuring resources are directed where they are most needed.

The bills now move to the Wisconsin State Senate for further consideration. Once passed and signed into law, organizations across Wisconsin will have improved support in their mission to help homeless veterans.
