Assembly Republicans Vote to Support Teachers in the Classroom

Madison – Rep. Joy Goeben (R-Hobart) expressed her gratitude today as the Assembly voted in strong support of Assembly Bill 614, explicitly authorizing teachers to maintain order, establish and enforce classroom rules.

“No teacher should ever walk into a classroom fearing for their safety, and no student should have their learning interrupted by violence or chaos. Yet today, too many teachers face threats, physical attacks, and constant disruption, turning what should be a place of growth and discovery into one of stress and uncertainty.

“Yet today, when given an opportunity to support teachers in their classrooms, as well as foster an environment conducive for students to learn, Assembly Democrats chose to decry the legislation. They scolded legislators for allegedly not supporting public schools and school systems, but they refused to support the teachers in those schools. Further they made claims in committee and on the Assembly Floor that teachers and administration already target students of color, and teachers will use this legislation to take out their frustrations on students with disabilities.

“I am astounded Assembly Democrats would criticize these highly trained, valuable professionals, first by not supporting legislation to protect their physical safety, but then to make these accusations. I find Assembly Democrats’ actions highly disconcerting and appreciate my Republican colleagues in seeing the value of protecting those who instruct our next generation. I am grateful for our teachers, the work they provide, and their dedication to our children across the state,” stated Rep. Goeben

AB 614 clearly defines and strengthens teacher authority by authorizing teachers to maintain order, establishing and enforcing classroom rules, providing the ability to call 911 in an emergency, and requesting immediate assistance during a disruptive or violent incident.
