MADISON- Last week, Democratic Governor Tony Evers vetoed Assembly Bill 87, a bill that would have created additional barriers to restoring Wisconsinites’ right to vote following the completion of court-ordered sentences.

In response, Rep. Hysell (D- Sun Prairie) released the following statement:

“I appreciate Governor Evers’ veto of Assembly Bill 87. AB 87 sought to restrict the constitutionally protected right of a citizen to vote by conditioning it upon that person’s wealth.

“I spoke against AB 87 on the floor of the assembly because poll taxes are unconstitutional. Our forefathers did not fight for our independence so that the Wisconsin legislature could decide you are too poor to vote.

“My fellow Democratic legislators and I will continue to fight to protect Wisconsinites’ rights and liberties from state and federal efforts to roll them back.”
