MADISON- Representative Andrew Hysell (D-Sun Prairie) welcomed and honored Sun Prairie resident, Captain Edward “Phil” Witkiewicz, as the 48th Assembly District’s First Responder of the Year.

Representative Hysell (D-48) released the following statement:

“Captain Edward “Phil” Witkiewicz has dedicated his life to protecting people and serving his community. After a tour in Afghanistan as an army medic in 2004, Captain Witkiewicz joined the Wisconsin State Patrol 2007. After eighteen years of service, he was promoted to Captain of the Southwest region where he oversees 120 officers.

“As a state patrol officer, Captain Witkiewicz is personally responsible for countless lifesaving acts on and off duty. His efforts include stabilizing an injured victim in a building at risk of collapsing, rescuing occupants of a burning vehicle, performing CPR to save two individuals lacking any pulse, and preventing a woman from jumping off a bridge.

“Captain Witkiewicz has done all of this to help others while successfully facing his own battle with an auto-immune health issue. Phil underwent a liver transplant just last year, but that did not stop him one bit. His strength and fortitude in the face of adversity are an inspiration for us all.

“I was honored to recognize Captain Witkiewicz and his accomplishments today in the State Capitol. It also was a pleasure to meet his amazing family who accompanied him to the recognition ceremony. We are all lucky to have Phil Witkiewicz as a Sun Prairie resident and as a Captain for the Wisconsin State Patrol.”
