MADISON- Today, both houses of the Wisconsin State Legislature passed the biennial state budget after weeks of negotiation between legislative leaders. It will now be sent to Governor Evers’ desk for final approval.
In response, Rep. Hysell (D- Sun Prairie) released the following statement:
“I voted no on this Republican budget because it lacks sufficient funding for child care stabilization. I voted no because it continues a shameful legacy of refusing to accept federal healthcare dollars. But first and foremost, I voted no because it does not fund our public schools.
“Legislative Republicans have made structural changes to the way we fund public schools in Wisconsin. They have shifted a large part of the tax burden for schools from the state onto local taxpayers. This is an intentional effort to shift the blame from themselves, where it rightly belongs, to public schools.
“This budget unfortunately gives Republicans cover to keep pretending that the constant property tax referenda are not their fault. It claims to add unprecedented funding for schools, but it does nothing to fix the structural problem intentionally created to end Wisconsin public education as we know it.
“Today’s budget passage was a disappointment for the people of Wisconsin. Republicans did not meaningfully fund public education, child care, or healthcare. Any small, short-term gains under the guise of compromise won’t change the overall picture in our state: that we need to do better for our children and families.”
