MADISON, WI – Representative Brent Jacobson (R – Mosinee) released the following statement after Senate Bill 33 was signed into law as 2025 Wisconsin Act 34:
“Today, Wisconsin State Law took a major step towards catching up with artificial intelligence and image generation technology,” said Rep. Jacobson. “Act 34 will protect Wisconsinites from bad actors who use emerging technology to blackmail, harass, or intimidate. Our constituents deserve to live without fear of attacks on their reputations and livelihoods. As the Assembly lead author for this legislation, I’m honored that I could play a part in delivering these updates to our law.”
Under 2025 Wisconsin Act 34, it is a felony to post or publish a realistic synthetic nude or sexual image of a person with the intent to harass, coerce, or intimidate them. Additionally, this act creates a misdemeanor offense for knowingly reproducing a private representation of an individual who did not consent to the making of the reproduction.
“It has been uplifting to see the broad, bipartisan support this bill has received as it passed through the legislative process,” said Rep. Jacobson. “Recent events like the tragic death of DC Everest student Bradyn Bohn demonstrate how vulnerable we can be to online coercion and intimidation. I am proud that my colleagues in the Legislature and Governor Evers could come together to proactively update our laws and keep Wisconsinites safe!”
