MADISON, WI — Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly met for the final session of the year. The bills taken up addressed public schools, elections, and healthcare. Unfortunately, most bills voted on failed to provide real solutions Wisconsinites need.
“For over 15 years, Republicans have failed to fund our public schools. Instead of funding local public schools, the Republican majority filled today’s calendar with bills that would close schools, causing even greater challenges for our rural communities including those in the 96th District. The bills we voted on today demonstrate how out of touch and tone-deaf Republicans are to the needs and wants of Wisconsinites.”
Democrats offered multiple amendments to the long list of bad bills for today’s floor session. Those amendments would have funded our public schools, added transparency and accountability for voucher schools, and lowered costs in our communities. Every amendment authored by a Democrat was dismissed by the Republican leadership, just as every Democrat-authored bill has been shelved this session.
Today, in a stunning example of procedural partisanship and callousness, Speaker Vos blocked a move by Democrats to get the Medicaid Postpartum Expansion measure to a vote – a bill that has 73 legislative co-sponsors on both sides of the aisle, including 29 Assembly Republicans.
“Despite today’s colossal disappointment of the year’s final session day, I remain focused on supporting our public schools and other needs of Wisconsinites. My fellow Democrats and I will not give up on doing what’s right for Wisconsin, including making healthcare and childcare more affordable.”
