Madison— On Wednesday, State Representative Joel Kitchens (R-Sturgeon Bay) issued the following statement after Governor Evers delivered his budget address:

“Once again, the governor announced a completely unrealistic budget plan that taxpayers can’t and shouldn’t have to afford. His plan includes a 20% spending increase, 1,300 new positions, and a wish list so long that no child would dare send it to Santa.

Wisconsin has a $4 billion surplus that is mostly made up of one-time money. It’s irresponsible to spend it as the governor would do, by creating new programs with ongoing costs. That money will run out with no way to replace it.

I share many of the governor’s overarching priorities, but his budget is so unrealistic that there is almost no starting point to negotiate. Once again, Republicans will be responsible and do the hard work of balancing the state budget. You can be sure our plan won’t max out the credit cards or spend our state into debt. Our plan will protect taxpayers and invest in priorities like education, safe roads, and keeping health care costs in check.”

Representative Kitchens represents Door, Kewaunee, and parts of Brown County.
