(Madison) – Rep. Krug joined his Assembly Republican colleagues and passed education reforms to improve standards and ensure students are getting the education they deserve.
“I think most of us were shocked when Department of Public Instruction Secretary Jill Underly unilaterally lowered education standards for Wisconsin students,” said Rep. Krug. “In an effort to improve her image and hide her less than stellar record, Underly threw Wisconsin kids and their parents under the bus. The legislation we passed today reverses that decision and returns state education standards to the appropriate level. ”
In addition to raising education standards, the Assembly passed a number of additional bills to improve education outcomes:
- Curriculum Transparency to Empower Parents – Parents deserve to know what their children are being shown and taught in the classroom without having to go through an arduous process of open-records requests or having a school district tell them no. This legislation mandates a school district provide such materials at the request of a parent within 14 days.
- Banning Student Cell-Phone Use During Class – The presence and use of cell phones in school and classrooms has significant negative impacts on student learning, achievement, and mental health. This legislation requires each school district to enact policies which at a minimum ban the use of cell-phones by students during class. ∙ Ensuring Funding Goes to the Classroom – Taxpayers and the state of Wisconsin invest billions each year educating our students. This legislation mandates that a minimum of 70% of this funding be utilized directly in classrooms.
