MADISON, Wis. – Today, the Wisconsin Supreme court announced their decision in Kaul vs Urmanski. This case challenged an 1849 provision in the Wisconsin constitution that had been interpreted as a criminal abortion ban.
Representative Miresse (D-Stevens Point) released the following statement in response to the ruling:
“Today’s decision is a victory for reproductive freedom and a powerful rejection of politicians inserting themselves into deeply personal medical decisions. Since the 2022 repeal of Roe v. Wade, patients and doctors in Wisconsin were stuck in legal limbo. Unsure if they could get or provide the medically necessary care that had been protected for nearly 50 years. Today that uncertainty is ended.”
“Now we must pass the Abortion Rights Restoration Act to guarantee that individuals have the power to make their own healthcare decisions around pregnancy by removing medically inappropriate, dangerous restrictions on abortion care, and establishing a right to bodily autonomy. Pregnancy is complicated, it can be dangerous, and every pregnancy is different. Our state policies should reflect this complexity and be driven by sound science. The people of Wisconsin deserve access to the healthcare their doctors recommend.”
