Madison – Today, the Wisconsin State Assembly’s Committee on Government Operations, Accountability, and Transparency (GOAT) voted to recommend passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 274, legislation authored by State Representative Adam Neylon (R-Pewaukee).

Part of the Republican Party’s Red Tape Reset legislative package, AB 274 introduces a new system to ensure Wisconsin’s administrative rules are regularly reviewed and remain accountable to the public. The bill creates a periodic expiration, or “sunset,” of each chapter of the Wisconsin Administrative Code and requires state agencies to seek approval before readopting any rule. Under the bill, agencies must notify legislative committees before renewing a chapter, allowing legislators to object and require a full rulemaking process when necessary.

After the vote, Rep. Neylon made the following statement.

“AB 274 increases transparency, prevents outdated rules from staying on the books indefinitely, and ensures agencies operate within clear statutory authority. This bill represents a major step toward modernizing Wisconsin’s regulatory framework and improving government accountability.”
