Madison – State Representative Adam Neylon (R-Pewaukee) spoke today at the Wisconsin Technology Council’s event, “AI at the Crossroads: Safety, Trust and Wisconsin’s Future Examined.” The Technology Council, an independent, non-profit and non-partisan board with members from tech companies, venture capital firms, higher education research institutions, government and law, is the science and technology advisor to the Governor and the Legislature.
The conversation covered issues ranging from public policy and economics to the ethical and societal impact from AI. As the author of 2023 Wisconsin Act 123, legislation to prohibit the undisclosed use of AI in political advertisements, Rep. Neylon has been a leader in AI policy in the Wisconsin legislature. After his service on the panel, the Representative made the following statement:
“I was honored to join Wisconsin’s Tech Council panel to discuss the future of AI in our state. While I believe we must avoid the heavy hand of government and the confusion of patchwork state regulations, Wisconsin can still lead with common-sense safeguards. As Washington drags its feet, we can take smart, limited action to defend transparency and protect Wisconsinites, like my AI disclosure bill, which simply requires honesty in campaign videos and audio. That’s how we prevent deception in our elections without stifling innovation.
“Moving forward, as we continue to navigate Wisconsin’s tech future, I’ll encourage my colleagues at all levels of government to prioritize individual data rights and protections, and to invest in education so our students understand how these technologies are build, helping to breed the next generation of innovation. We don’t want to overregulate technology; we want to give it a safe and healthy place to grow with clear, fair parameters. That’s the Wisconsin way; fostering innovation while protecting our people.”
