Madison, Wis. – On Tuesday members of the Wisconsin Gun Safety Coalition along with Democratic legislators gathered with community advocates and the Attorney General to announce a legislative package regarding gun sales in Wisconsin.
“Background checks on all gun sales are a piece of common-sense legislation that will lead to the decrease in gun violence. In a time when gun deaths are at an all-time high, it’s more important than ever to pass legislation that will help prevent this violence. The negligence on the Republican side by the refusal to hold a public hearing show that they are not listening to the 87% of Wisconsinites that support background checks,” Rep. Roe said.
The 48 hour waiting period prohibits the customer from receiving their purchased handgun until 72 hours have passed since the firearms dealer receives approval from the Department of Justice. This extra layer of verification works hand and hand with the background check to ensure that the people who are being armed are not threats to children, families, and ultimately the people of Wisconsin.
Families all over America have been touched by the consequences of legislation that allows easy access to guns. The number one cause of death for children and teens in America is due to gun violence. The rise in school shootings is the direct ramification of years of inaction. This was highlighted by West High School students Maliha Nu’Man and Aviel Mack, who stated, “We ask of our world to not turn desks to coffins so quickly, we whisper of safety and they grant us prayers. Did you know that words do not heal bullet wounds?”
Representative Roe has joined fellow Democratic members in the support of gun safety laws that would help prevent further tragedy for the people of Wisconsin.
In response, Rep. Roe released the following statement:
“I have seen the impact of gun violence on loved ones, families, students, and these very common-sense measures that are a part of this package will keep our communities safer. Over 87% of Wisconsinites are in favor of such laws.”
“The persistent refusal to bring up the issue of gun violence for discussion or review is so telling that Republicans aren’t interested in keeping our communities safe as they may claim. These measures not only ensure public safety, but show support of local law enforcement.”
Rep. Roe ended by stating “I have had personal loss due to gun violence. I have seen how it has impacted every aspect of life for people. What are you waiting for Republicans? The people of Wisconsin have shown you that this is a bipartisan issue, it’s common sense.”
